Wisdom – Yoga and Menopause

live course

Wisdom - Yoga and Menopause

Honouring our bodies, honouring our wisdom – this series of  workshops will invite us to listen and trust ourselves in perimenopause or menopause. A lot of the time, we get stuck in ‘symptoms’ and ‘battling’ menopausal symptoms like brain fatigue, hot flushes, night sweats etc (etc!) Or we get lost in a decision about supplements and HRT.

With Insights from the world of yoga and ayurveda, we will certainly work with yoga for the liver and meditations for brain fatigue – but the deeper inquiry will be to tune into this new phase of life and what it has to offer us. And what we might be able to offer each other – listening to each other. Our invitation is to  drop the judgments and expectations we place upon ourselves at this time of life…

Course Structure

  • A 4-Week series of workshops to tap into our inner wisdom

  • Yoga and Meditation for grounding and guidance through perimenopause and menopause

  • Meditations for enhanced intuition
  • Ayurvedic insights into our perimenopausal and menopausal journey
  • Bonus Video practices

On a personal note… I am right int the middle of this journey – I do  not have all the answers. I want to share what I have learnt and understood so far – and hear from you – let’s try and tap into a collective wisdom. Our mothers and grandmothers may not have spoken about this… but we can and we can start to create a new narrative….

Our Workshop Journey:

Understanding Perimenopause and Menopuase
Asana Sequence for the Liver – Balancing hormones and energies

My journey so far – What I have discovered about supplements and daily practices. Looking at insights from ayurveda.

This first week will be a foundation for the course – and an invitation to you if you have questions and things you want to work on/  consider.

Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra to encourage deep listening – tuning into our body’s own innate wisdom. Do we need to create a vow/ an intention for ourselves? How do we cultivate more tolerance (ksama)  and drop judgment?

We will work with an asana sequence to create inner strength and resolve – introducing a Sankalpa (conscious intention). We will also discuss how to navigate the overwhelming world of “meno” washing and the judgment (aka – wellness) industry. Of course, there are gems to be had – but we need to be vigilant in how menopause has been commodified.

We will work with yoga and meditation inspired by Shakti – Goddess energy. We will talk of different Goddess archetypes and how we can find fortitude and inspiration from working with them. We will also talk about the importance of community.  Learning to appreciate our changing role as women. We might not yet be the grandmothers, the elders – but our voice is strong.

What to Expect:

One of my favourite ways to work with physical yoga is developing a deeper understanding of  sthira sukaham asanam” which we could interpret  as being comfortable in our skin… let’s explore that… Let’s work with some of the other central teachings of yoga, ahimsa (non-harming), santosha (contentment), ksama (tolerance and patience) and dhriti (which is fortitude, but we could translate to inner strength). We will work with Shakti meditations and practices to build buddhi (intuition) and viveka (discernment).

I am really inspired by teacher Uma Dunsmore Tuli  – she talks about the importance of sangat – community – hearing each other, feeling seen – really listening… So we will take time, make a chai and listen to each other… going beyond the myths of menopause/ the demonizing of our bodies, the stealth of GOOP and Gwyneth Paltrow’s aim to “rebrand” menopause.

"We should never judge how any woman experiences menopause. Each woman is just trying her best to make peace with herself." Alexandra Pope

Learning to Listen in a Noisy Menopausal Marketplace

Maybe if we start to trust ourselves and honour our body’s own innate wisdom, we will be able to tune into the right practices and supplements for us intuitively.

Intuition needs space… intuition needs quiet.. and yet our attention is under attack…

There is also another battle we need to consider… the commodification of menopause and ultimately our bodies.

I have long taken issue with the wellness “industry” – we need to be vigilant of false or embellished claims, “meno-washing” and the increasing fight for not just our cash, but our attention.

It is great that really only  in the last 10 years has it become acceptable  to talk about the menopause… however, we now have to navigate an overwhelming world of products, supplements, opinions and a new wave of judgments on top of the symptoms we might be experiencing, the lack of mental space we might feel and our questions about where we are at in life.

"Viriam is truly one of the very best meditation and yoga teachers I've ever met. She has the most soothing, and comforting voice and her words have a way of grounding you in the present moment like nothing else. She has a really special way of making you feel a deep sense of calm and safety, as she guides you on the journey inwards. Having worked in a profession which can be emotionally gruelling, her classes have been my magical touchstone."
